PROGRAM LEVEL

The essential characteristic of the Master’s Program in Architecture is that it lays a general foundation for advanced studies in Architecture and allied fields in the first semester by exposing the students to a deeper level of understanding in Architecture, Research, Research Methodologies and Writing. Through the selection and completion of a Comprehensive Design Project, Research Project and a number of electives, it offers the opportunities for a student to acquire knowledge and skills in a specialized discipline. The students can strengthen the skills so acquired by means of the completion of research publications.

The program is offered over full three-semester duration and therefore can be completed within 1.5 years of studies. (This is the period preferred by the prospective students).

It offers 7 specializations as follows. However, at any given year, only one specialization will be offered based on demand and availability of expertise:
1. Housing
2. Urban Design
3. Construction Technologies
4. Digital Design
5. Sustainability
6. Interior Architecture
7. Landscape Architecture

DETAILED STUDY PLAN

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

1. To inculcate in the students, an ability to articulate a strong theoretical and philosophical position with regard to architecture and allied disciplines enabling to approach the design of the built-environment based on advanced research.
2. To enable the students to understand complex theoretical and design aspects related to an issue of relevance in the built-environment
3. To enable the students to devise planned design interventions related to a specific specialization to resolve significant issues of the built-environment.
4. To enable the students to articulate detailed technological applications to achieve resolutions to significant issues of the built-environment.
5. To enable the students to conceptualize research in response to a significant issue, collect data, analyze and derive generalizable conclusions.

PROGRAM INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

a) Understand design research and research methodologies.
b) Possess an in-depth knowledge of either

  • the habitations of people or
  • the complex processes that produce urban spaces or
  • advanced building materials and construction technologies and their applications in the built-environment
  • the use of digital technologies in resolving built-environmental issues
  • approaches to sustainability of the built-environment
  • complex contemporary issues of landscapes
  • complex contemporary issues of interiors.

c) Able to conceptualize and examine a critical issue of the built-environment through research.
d) Able to conceptualize an appropriate theoretical and philosophical basis to produce planned interventions in the built-environment,
e) Able to devise design proposals to address significant socio-spatial issues pertaining to the built-environment.
f) Able to produce comprehensive verbal narratives to communicate design proposals for built-environments.
g) Able to produce comprehensive verbal narratives to communicate research ideas related to built-environments.
h) Able to produce comprehensive graphical (digital) narratives to communicate design proposals for built-environments.
i) Able to act responsibly in interactions with the clients, academics and other professionals.
