PROGRAM LEVEL
The University of Bahrain has been a leader in architectural education for over thirty years, successfully graduating numerous students with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. In addition, it offers a Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design and has introduced a Master of Architecture program since 2020. Many graduates in Architecture and Interior Design have pursued postgraduate qualifications abroad; however, there remains a significant demand for advanced degree programs in Architecture, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture locally. For those unable to travel overseas for such qualifications, the University of Bahrain aims to fulfill this need by providing high-quality postgraduate programs.
In response to this demand, the Department of Architecture proposed establishing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Architecture in 2022, making it the first of its kind in the Kingdom of Bahrain. This program offers a unique opportunity for graduate students in architecture and related fields to further their studies and for architects from GCC countries to participate. The PhD program encompasses a comprehensive curriculum that includes a variety of courses and self-directed learning opportunities. This innovative teaching approach enables students to engage in advanced research activities, fostering the discovery and creation of new knowledge—an essential requirement for earning a PhD degree.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
PEOs are to enable the students,
- Become accomplished and independent professionals capable of linking architectural knowledge to rigorous and advanced approaches to scholarship.
- Make original contributions to the current state of discussion of theory and methods in architecture through research, research-based practice and teaching.
- Become ethical and responsible individuals capable of assuming positions of leadership in the profession and the community.
PROGRAM INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
A student who completes a PhD shall:
- Demonstrate detailed critical knowledge and understanding about the specific area of research conducted at the forefront of a particular field.
- Use highly specialized and expert skills to critique current knowledge to demonstrate creativity and originality in the development and application of new knowledge.
- Improvise and use a combination of approaches of research methodologies and techniques relevant to the field of inquiry to make informed judgments in situations where data/information is very limited and/or inconsistent.
- Critically analyze, evaluate and/or synthesize very complex ideas and information to conceptualize original and creative theoretical arguments based on facts and information.
- Use a significant range of professional level of skills to communicate research outcomes to peers and others.
- Operate at an expert level to design and implement independently, an original and pioneering research activity.
