تتركز اهتمامات الدكتور كمال البحثية في جوانب عديدة، منها نمذجة العمليات الكيميائية ومحاكاتها وتحسينها، مع اهتمام خاص بالتقطير وعمليات التكرير وفصل الأغشية. وينصب تركيزه البحثي الحالي على مجال ترشيد استهلاك الطاقة والمياه. وقد نشر العديد من الأوراق البحثية في مجلات هندسية رائدة وفي وقائع مؤتمرات دولية.
