PROGRAM LEVEL

The program requires the successful completion of a total of 36 credit hours: six courses (24 credit hours) and a thesis (12 credit hours) of an acceptable standard.

Energy transition refers to the energy sector’s shift from fossil-based systems of energy production and consumption (e.g., oil, natural gas, and coal) to alternative sources with low carbon emissions. The transition towards sustainable energy systems has gathered tremendous momentum in recent years. Yet, despite the substantial progress worldwide, the energy transition continues to pose significant technological, commercial, and political challenges for businesses and governments. Besides, meeting the challenges of future energy technologies in the Kingdom of Bahrain requires well-trained professionals with a profound knowledge of all the exciting opportunities available to us. This program provides an extensive overview of the diverse technical and non-technical (e.g., economic, policy) challenges associated with the transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy with a broader systems-thinking approach to understanding multi-energy systems’ complex and interconnected nature.

The M.Sc. in Sustainable Energy Transition Systems is a 36-credit hour interdisciplinary program designed to provide systems-based Knowledge in the following key areas: Sustainable Energy, Energy Generation, and Storage, Energy Policy and Management, and Energy Digitization. The program graduates will have acquired state-of-art Knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to address the technical, economic, and environmental issues in the design of various sustainable energy systems. Moreover, the graduates will have attained the methodical attributes to operate, control, evaluate, and manage the sustainable energy systems of the future. Hence, they will advance and lead the Kingdom’s energy sector into a highly efficient, reliable entity. This newly offered program aligns with the goals set by H.R.H. Prince Salman Bin Hamad Al-Khalifa at the Conference of Parties (COP) 26 in Glasgow.

The program is based on a careful balance of core, elective courses, and a thesis. Core Courses: There are five core courses (Energy Systems; Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS); Corporate Finance, Accounting, and Policy for Energy Systems; Advanced Energy Conversion; Digitalization for Energy Systems). Elective Course: The student is required to take 1 elective course, such as Hydrogen Generation and Storage, Biofuels, and Biorefineries, or Special Topics with emphasis on contemporary issues related to Energy Transition Systems.

The research leading to the master’s thesis is intended to be creative and targeted toward practical problems of interest. The program may be followed on either a full-time or part-time basis.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

1. Providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the technical, economic, and policy aspects of sustainable energy systems.
2. Equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to design, implement, and manage sustainable energy projects.
3. Developing students’ critical thinking skills and ability to analyze complex energy systems, identify potential problems, and propose effective solutions.
4. Fostering an interdisciplinary perspective that integrates science, engineering, economics, and policy to address sustainability challenges.
5. Preparing students for careers in the sustainable energy industry, government agencies, research institutions, or consulting firms.
6. Encouraging students to develop ethical and socially responsible approaches to energy systems design and management.
7. Providing opportunities for students to conduct research and engage in hands-on projects related to sustainable energy.

PROGRAM INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

PILO 1: Demonstrate critical Knowledge using specialist theories and concepts of sustainable energy transition systems, policies, economics, energy generation, storage, utilization, and its major current issues.
PILO 2: Apply critical Knowledge of science and engineering to research complex problems that include analysis, economic evaluation, design, and optimization to realize sustainable energy transition systems.
PILO 3: Critically analyze and evaluate contemporary issues and/or principles in sustainable energy transition systems using a combination of approaches and professional levels of insight and interpretation.
PILO 4: Apply specialized research methodologies and/or experimental investigation to address energy-transition-related problems.
PILO 5: Demonstrate proficiency in writing and oral presentation skills to effectively communicate energy-transition system ideas and techniques to various specialists.
PILO 6: Develop novel engineering solutions to achieve sustainable energy-transition-related problems.

ADMISSION AND GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To be considered for admission to the M.Sc. in Sustainable Energy Transition Systems, students must first satisfy the basic admission requirements according to the rules and regulations of the University of Bahrain. Regular degree status includes having a bachelor’s degree in any Engineering or Science specialization with a cumulative average GPA of no less than (2.67) out of (4.0) or as per the University Graduate Studies Rules and Regulations.

GRADUATION REQUIRMENTS

As per the University Graduate Studies Rules and Regulations, else the student will be awarded with a Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Energy Transition Systems if successfully passed 24 credit hours (representing all the courses excluding the M.Sc. thesis) with a cumulative GPA not less than 2.67.
